Tim started as a singer at the age of five, in Chicago, Illinois back in the 60’s, where street corner harmony was the in thing. He and his three brothers, Kevin, Maurice, and Gerald Burton, would sing in churh as The Burton Brothers, using sweet four part harmonies they wowed audiences so much that it encouraged their father, James Burton to motivate them to work hard and be the best that they could be. Later, they change the name to Tomorrow’s People and landed a record deal with stage production in the mid 70’s, releasing their debut album called “Open Soul” in 1976 followed by the single “Hurry On Up Tomorrow”.
During his journey out on his own for the first time without his family, Tim landed a jazz gig in no time. Emulating bassist like Stanley Clarke, John Patitucci, Marcus Miller and many others got him popularity quick. In the early 90’s Tim toured overseas with his own act to Taichung, Taiwan, which was his first time abroad. Then returned to land a cruise ship job in the Caribbean where he found home in Nassau, Bahamas. Shortly after, he moved back to the States in South Beach, Miami. In 1993, Tim returned to Chicago just in time to audition for Mavis Staples of the Staple Singers. While working with Mavis, Tim experienced sold out auditoriums, star status, touring abroad, and the chance to play on the same venue with his long-time music idols, Chick Corea, John Patitucci, Bobby McFerrin, BB King, Isaac Hayes, and Bonny Raitt. After Mavis, Tim currently started working back in the studio, this time with Chuck Colbert (bassist for the American Breed, and Rufus) releasing a new American Breed CD which Tim played bass, co-produced, co-wrote, mixed, and mastered. He continues to learn from top producers, engineers, and an assortment of singers.
So when you talk about old school, Tim’s been there with over 40 years past experience while keeping current with the sound of today.
